Best Free Encryption Software

Before I start off with actual reviews are mentioned a TrueCrypt used to be my go to free encryption software. But it was kinda abruptly discontinued in May 2014. Which is still be usable and safe, though. There was a number of audits done on TrueCrypt. That did not find any major vulnerabilities. Although there were rumors of an NSA Backdoor. But since it’s no longer being developed I’ve started looking at other TrueCrypt alternatives just to be on the safe side. Here is the list of best free encryption software for 2017.

  • VeraCrypt
  • AxCrypt
  • 7-Zip
  • AES Crypt
  • DiskCryptor

VeraCrypt

VeraCrypt is a free encryption software based on TrueCrypt. This is available for Windows Mac and Linux. It is developed by IDRIX. Which is a French IT security firm. With VeraCrypt, you can encrypt entire hard drive partitions or file containers. And it has many encryption options just like TrueCrypt. VeraCrypt also can open TrueCrypt volume thing containers as well as convert them to VeraCrypt format with the exception of system partitions. As for the interface, it’s more or less the same as TrueCrypt, which makes it easy to transition to if that’s what you were using before. Overall I think it’s a good free encryption software. That’s fairly easy to use and has all the features you would want in a free encryption program.

AxCrypt

AxCrypt is a free open source file encryption software for Windows, developed by Axantum Software. Unlike TrueCrypt, AxCrypt does not support file containers but instead encrypt files individually. You can encrypt multiple files at once but they will all be encrypted separately and you also have to decrypt them separately. AxCrypt disintegrated to the Windows shell so you can use it directly via Windows Explorer. By simply right-clicking a file and choosing to encrypt to be AxCrypt. You can encrypt files with the .axx format and it also supports self-decrypting .exe files.

Also, AxCrypt has many other features like command line interface, key-file generator, AES encryption with 128-bit keys. It’s a very lightweight free encryption software. It also supports for files larger than 4GB.

AxCrypt does not however support is the encryption the hard drive partitions. But I think it’s a much better program for encrypting and decrypt files.

7-Zip

7-Zip is a free open-source file archiver much like WinRAR or WinZip. 7-Zip is mainly for Windows. Although there are command line versions for Mac and Linux as well called P7-Zip. 7-Zip can do in regards to encryption is encrypt its file archives but a fairly strong AES 256-bit encryption algorithm. AES 256 has been approved by US government to protect the information classified as top secret. Which is the highest specification in the US government. So for most purposes I’d say it’s a fairly secure algorithm. Although we may never know if it can be easily cracked by NSA or some other alphabet agency.

You can say to encrypt at 7-Zip file archives are a bit like the TrueCrypt file containers except maybe more efficiently compress. I think 7-Zip is a good free encryption software. And I do use it as my file archive on my Windows computers as well. Seeing as it can also open most other file archive formats.

AES Crypt

AES Crypt is an open source free encryption software. It’s available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. With AES Crypt, you can encrypt single files but not folders or hard drives. It can, however, encrypt multiple files at once. But that will generate separate an AES encrypted files for each file that you chose to encrypt. AES Crypt uses a powerful 256-bit encryption algorithm. Which will render encrypted files inaccessible for anyone who does not have the password.

Using it this fairly simple just right click the file select AES encrypt and choose a password for your file and click OK. The only problem I encountered here was if I decrypt an AES files and the original file is still in the same folder, AES Crypt is unable to deliver to file. So make sure to rename or delete the original file before decrypting.

AES Crypt is fairly good for lots of encryption purposes. But considering it can’t encrypt entire folders and hard drive partitions. At my knowledge, it does not support the use of key files as passwords. I would not consider the full encryption solution like TrueCrypt was a may need additional software to meet all your encryption needs.

DiskCryptor

DiskCryptor is an open source free encryption software. It’s available for Windows only. With DiskCryptor, you can encrypt entire hard drive partitions including the system partition. And even existing partitions with data already on them which is a fairly unique feature of DiskCryptor.

You can use DiskCryptor to encrypt external devices including USB hard drives, USB thumb drives, CDs, and DVDs. And It’s compatible with most third-party bootloaders. It also supports multiple algorithms. Including AES, Twofish, Serpent and even a combination of those algorithms.

DiskCryptor can be a good choice for partition encryption. But it’s not a full encryption tool like TrueCrypt. But I think it’s still a good free encryption software.

Conclusion

Eventually, I may or run outta ideas myself so please if you have any free software you want me to review or other suggestions let me know in the comments.
