Razer DeathStalker Ultimate Gaming KeyboardThe Razer DeathStalker Ultimate Version is probably the one keyboard to get if you’ve come to think that keyboards are annoying. It’s not only backlit, but it has an LCD screen with apps on the side! No matter what you choose to display on it, the look is incredible. The apps you can add are the following, to allow mentioning a few: Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, YouTube, Browser, Game Clock, etc.
The backlighting options are also great on it naturally. The default Razer green looks awesome, but if you wish to change it, you can always do so. Its main downside may be the price. It certainly doesn’t come cheap. If that’s too much for you, you can go for the Expert version at a low price and still get backlighting.
SteelSeries Merc Stealth Gaming KeyboardI’ve always been impressed with the peripherals from Steelseries. They’re always well-packaged, look professional and deliver. It’s a company that’s always been closely linked to the eSports world (electronic sports), so the devices are always tested in some way by someone who knows what they’re talking about. The brand isn’t too flashy either, generally delivering devices that are reliable, rather than ones that look like spaceships.
So if you’re an avid gamer like me, you certainly want to take a look at the Steelseries Merc Stealth gaming keyboard. It’s one oversized keyboard that will certainly please a lot of hardcore gamers out there. I haven’t heard about any pro-gamers using it, but you certainly have two different options.
If the standard keyboard would ever end up making you perform better, while the left section can help you relax and switch things up a bit, the choice is all yours.
What I like about the Merc is how you get two sets of gaming arrows so that they will get used up more slowly. And you can also use a different set depending on the type of game you play.
The arrows on the side resemble a lot those of the Madcatz keyboards you can flip. They’re bigger and allow you to make fewer mistakes. People with big hands will certainly enjoy them when it comes to playing their big matches. What’s good is how you still type normally with the right section when you work, so there’s no compromise to be made here. You get both types of interfaces and use them however you like.
All around the big arrows on the left, you get all kinds of bindable buttons that you can use for shortcuts like your weapons. You get a lot more than you will ever need, and that’s a good thing.
Logitech G510s Gaming KeyboardLogitech’s selection of keyboards has been doing really well and the Logitech 510s is an offer that’s very well balanced in terms of price and features. When I first took a look at it at the store, I must say that I told myself that I wouldn’t be able to afford this, but once I saw the price tag, I realized that it was indeed possible to get a beast like this.
The LCD on this keyboard is certainly the main attraction. It certainly plays a good role in making your games more enjoyable. It can display helpful information in regards to voice communications, system status, and in-game statistics. What’s nice is how the possibilities of this screen can be taken to another level by little apps that can be created and shared around the web.
In my opinion, if you already own a gaming keyboard, the G510s might not be exactly the one to go for since it didn’t offer a significant jump in any area, maybe except the number of macro keys. However, if your current gear happens to break and you’re looking for an uncomplicated replacement that you will certainly like, I would suggest the G510s any day.
Thermaltake eSPORTS Ultimate Gaming KeyboardThe Thermaltake eSports is another great keyboard to bring at a LAN Party. When the lights shut down announcing a night full of gaming, you will be able to choose among different backlighting colors, and they all look absolutely great. Whether it’s green, blue, purple or red, the Thermaltake is an excellent pick to match with your computer case.
On top of cool additional buttons, the keyboard also offers a fan, yes a fan, for your hands to cool off while you play for hours and hours. The thing sits at the top left of the device and can blow a small quantity of air just enough to keep the sweat away. It then offers audio jacks for you to connect your headset.
The design of this keyboard is just flawless and its look alone makes its worth paying.
SteelSeries Apex Gaming KeyboardAnd finally here’s by far our favorite pick when it comes to backlit keyboards.
The Steelseries Apex is simply too cool to look at with its different sections that you can set with different colors. There are 5 zones that you can customize with 16.8 million colors and 8 levels of intensity.
What more could you ask for? Moreover, the slim design of the keyboard makes all the lights stand out, and they have a nice bright glow to them. There are even sections on the side of the keyboard that glow too. The Apex makes it fun to set to assign different colors to sections depending on what you want to do. If green means you go ahead and attack, simply assign that color!
The rest of the features on the Apex are pretty good too. Aside from the slim profile mentioned earlier, the keyboard has 22 extra keys that you can use as you wish. This will be more than enough for even the most demanding gamers. That includes volume and media keys on the right, and let’s not forget to mention the two extra directional arrows.
Price wise, the Steelseries is pretty fair at a low price. If you’re a gaming PC builder, this keyboard is a must. It will look good with all your builds and will most likely never grow old. Steelseries calls the Apex their fastest-selling keyboard and it’s easy to see why. The thing looks gorgeous and works well. It’s easily our top pick for best backlit gaming keyboard.
So there you have it – the five best options when it comes to backlit gaming keyboards. All these models provide an excellent design and various colors, but the zone concept of the Apex simply stands above the pack. If we had to have an honorable mention for best performance, it would probably be the Thermaltake eSports. It works incredibly well for the price.
And finally, let’s mention that all these three keyboards come in more basic and cheaper versions. However, if you choose to go for those and pay less you’re more likely to lose some features, and that most likely includes backlighting. Indeed, backlighting is seen as a visual extra that should only make the very best models shine… so you must be ready to pay the price in most cases.
